Abstract

This capstone project implemented an occupational therapy sleep hygiene program tailored to the unique occupational demands of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue (LVFR) firefighters. Guided by the Occupational Adaptation theory and the CALMS Framework, this project conceptualized sleep as a meaningful occupation essential to health, safety, and functional performance. The project’s aim was to assess the feasibility of a sleep hygiene program designed for the fire service using standardized measures, including the Sleep Hygiene Index. The methodology incorporated a structured educational session focused on educating firefighters on the importance of sleep, modifying routines and environments to support restorative sleep, implementing fatigue management strategies to enhance safety and clinical decision making, and applying sleep hygiene strategies within a shift-work context. Findings have the potential to enhance the feasibility and value of occupational therapy-informed sleep health interventions to improve firefighter well-being and occupational performance.
