Abstract
On October 13, Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Las Vegas for their first primary debate of the 2016 election. This cycle, both Democrats and Republicans face a defining challenge: a new America with a rapidly changing demographic profile — in terms of race, ethnicity, generation, age, and region. What do these changes mean for both parties nationally, and in the Mountain West states in particular? What demographic challenges do both parties face in 2016?
This panel brought together a group of experts to discuss the changes, their significance, and the possibilities for political success. The discussion includes a sneak preview of data from the AEI, Center for American Progress, and the Brookings Institution “States of Change” project, which forecasts demographic change in 2016 and beyond and examines the political implications.
