Description

Our presentation, based on research conducted with Brookings Mountain West here at UNLV, will focus on the economic and workforce contribution of immigrants and international students. We will present data from our recently published fact sheet, “Immigrant Population in the Mountain West, 2023”, which derives data from the 2025 American Immigration Council (AIC) report “Map the Impact.” Our presentation will include state-level data on immigrant population, labor force participation, and economic contributions as of 2023. We will present three data tables that highlight data on each Mountain West State: Table 1 provides the number of Immigrant Residents, Immigrant Share of Population, Immigrant Spending Power, and Immigrant Taxes Paid. Table 2 presents an overview of international students’ presence and economic impact. Table 3 presents the top five industries with the largest shares of immigrant workers. Our research highlights three key takeaways about the Mountain West: Among the Mountain West states, Nevada (19.2%) reported the largest immigrant population share in 2023. In 2023, Construction ranked as the industry with the largest share of immigrant workers in Nevada (35.8%), New Mexico (24.2%), Colorado (20.7%), and Utah (8.9%), while Agriculture held the highest share in Arizona (29.3%). Arizona reported the highest number of jobs supported by international students (8,196) among Mountain West states in 2023. These key findings highlight the significant economic and labor force contributions made by immigrants and international students in the Mountain West
