Abstract

Recently, Las Vegas casinos made a subtle change to their roulette wheels that likely escaped the attention of the casual bettor: the addition of a third zero. Even the more seasoned, well-informed players seemed to take the latest fleecing in stride. After all, the more advantageous single-zero European tables carry a higher table minimum, typically $50-$100 per spin. Still, gamblers do have a choice: is it better to accept worse odds at, say, $10 per spin, or could larger bets on a European table be worth the increased risk of losing an entire stake within minutes? On which table is a player more likely to double their money? How many spins might that take? This work aims to answer these questions through computer simulation. The parameters of each study were chosen to reflect how a typical Las Vegas weekender with a limited bankroll might approach each version of roulette. It is hoped that the presented results serve as a guide for those recreational patrons.
