Abstract
This document is a performer’s guide to the five vocal works of Ángela Peralta from her 1875 Álbum Musical. While she is known as an operatic soprano in Mexico, her work as a composer is slowly receiving more recognition. This project builds on that growing interest by bringing her songs back into conversation by bringing her songs into a performance-centered framework and demonstrating that they extend beyond the expectations of salon music. This document combines historical context, score editing, and performance analysis to support modern singers. The original published scores contain many inconsistencies, including issues with text underlay, spelling, and notation. Because of this, informed and educated decisions were made to create interpretations of the text and music. These choices are based on the musical setting, the language of the text, and my understanding of the style, with the goal of making the music clearer and more useable for performers.
Each song is presented with translation, descriptive interpretation, and musical observations that connect the text directly to performance. The guide focuses on helping singers make expressive choices through clear understanding of the text, supported by bel canto principles such as legato, phrasing, and breath control. Overall, this project shows that Peralta’s songs are not just historical artifacts, but meaningful works that belong on the concert stage. By combining research and performance, this guide aims to make her music more accessible to singers today.
